Understanding Audi Ultra Quattro

Audi’s all-new Ultra Quattro all-wheel drive system has been a topic of much conversation in the automotive industry in recent months.

Featured in the new 2018 Audi Q5, Audi’s all-new Ultra Quattro all-wheel drive system has been a topic of much conversation in the automotive industry in recent months. But what is it exactly, and how does it differ from Audi’s traditional Quattro system? After all, the latter is an AWD technology that has often been described as one of the best (if not the best) in the industry. So why change it?

Audi Ultra Quattro: a more efficient way of getting power to the road

The first thing we should know about Audi’s Ultra Quattro system is that it is designed to do exactly what the current Quattro system has been doing for years, which is to offer optimal handling and stability in any situation. That said, Ultra Quattro was also designed to improve fuel-efficiency by being able to basically shut itself off when it is not needed.

In other words, Audi’s Ultra Quattro can disengage the rear axle and send power only to the front wheels when road conditions are clear, and when you are driving in a straight line or taking turns at conservative speeds. In such situations, you do not need all the advanced dynamics of the Quattro all-wheel drive system, and disconnecting the rear axle leads to an improvement in fuel economy that can reach 0.3 L/100 km.

The system is designed to continuously read the road, and adapt to it. The instant it detects a loss of traction at any wheel, it adjusts the power distribution in order to ensure optimal handling, just like the current Quattro system. When you start the engine, power is automatically sent to all four wheels in order to provide optimal grip. Getting out of a snowbank, for example, will be as efficient with Ultra Quattro as it is with the traditional Quattro system.

Ultimately, Ultra Quattro provides all of the benefits of Audi’s Quattro system, but with better fuel economy to go along with it.
