The world of entry-level luxury sedans is dominated by two models that distinctively stand out, the Audi A3 and the BMW 2 Series. Both provide an impressive combination of performance, refinement, efficiency, safety and connectivity at a price point that makes sense. That said, when it comes to providing value, the 2022 Audi A3 has the BMW 2 Series beat.
Indeed, the 2022 Audi A3 starts at $38,900 right out of the gate while the BMW 2 Series has gotten a lot more expensive in recent years with a starting price that is now well over $50,000.
A few years ago, the BMW 2 Series was a direct competitor to the A3, but now the 2 Series is a lot more expensive, BMW having chosen to take the model into another segment. BMW has indeed decided to make the 2 Series a more niche product that puts the emphasis more on performance than anything else. That said, even the 2022 Audi S3 with its powertrain that is quite capable of matching up power for power with the 2 Series is still a much better deal at $47,900.
The Audi A3 is the more usable option
The other point that should be noted when comparing the Audi A3 and the BMW 2 Series is that the latter is a two-door coupe while the A3 is a sedan with four doors. Despite being in the same segment and often compared to each other, these two German entry-level models are distinctively different when it comes to overall versatility and interior space. The A3 is a much better fit for young families or couples that have just had a baby with its larger rear seat and easier access.
Powering the 2022 Audi A3 is a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 201 horsepower compared to 228 horsepower in the entry-level BMW 2 Series. Although the BMW has more power, the Audi has roughly the same acceleration and performance both in a straight line and when passing. Better yet, it averages about 1.0 litre per 100 kilometres less in the city and on average.
In other words, the 2022 Audi A3 is:
- More comfortable than the BMW 2 Series
- More accessible and a much better deal
- Similar in performance but with better efficiency
- More spacious and practical
- More refined and more luxurious
